The purpose of this study was to systematically evaluate the effect of the therapeutic recreation program on the self-esteem, interpersonal relationship change and the negative symptoms of schizophrenic patients. Method: This study was designed with nonequivalent control group non-synchronized design. The data were collected from 17 samples in the experimental group and 17 samples in the control group hospitalized at the Dept. of Psychiatric in the medical center of K University from April ,1 to October, 17, 2003 . The subjects of the experimental group underwent the Therapeutic Recreation program twice a week for 5 weeks. The tools of this study were the Self-esteem Scale, Interpersonal Relationship Change Scale and Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale(PANSS). The data were analyzed with the use of the SPSS Win 11.0 program. The results of this study were summarized as follows ; 1. It was discovered that the Therapeutic Recreation program was effective in improving the self-esteem. (F=8.63 , p=.006) 2. It was discovered that the Therapeutic Recreation program was effective in the interpersonal relationship change.(F=4.18 , p=.049) 3. It was discovered that the Therapeutic Recreation program was effective in reducing the negative symptom .(F=4.47, p=.025) In conclusion, throughout the study , the Therapeutic Recreation program shows positive effects on the self-esteem, interpersonal relationship change and the negative symptom of schizophrenic patients.
