“Transformation and change”within the context of globalization and digitalization have become the mainstream of the cultural ideology in the 21st century. This trend has also influenced the field of Korean traditional music mainly with the application of electronic or computer-based music programs to Korean traditional music classes in the college and graduate school. However, this trend or “change”has also created a negative impact for the students and musicians because it limits the opportunity to experience native traditional music personally and to become sensitive to it. Indeed, many of the traditional old forms that continue without “change” are being treated as the “cultural junk”I argue that such educational activity should not limited to the development of technical and superficial features that force change on older traditions only in order to join the mainstream of t he new age. It is crucial for both the traditional musicians and the educational environment to be creatively and freely involved with the critical discourse, constantly re-examining the true meaning of “transformation” and “change,” and developing new musical traditions and a cultural environment suitable to the current trend of the cultural globalization.
