A Study on the Effectiveness of Analytical Theory Lee NaesunThis study discusses on whether the analytical theory provides a useful and objective method and what figures out through this objective method. At the present time, there are three analytical theories commonly suggested: Schenkerian theory, neo-Riemannian theory, and set theory. Two concepts correlated in the Schenkerian theory are the tonal structure framed by harmonic progression I-V-I and the chordal prolongation constructed by contrapuntal results. This theory provides the method to analyze tonal music. Using the Schenkerian theory, the analysis in this study demonstrates how Mozart constructs the structure showing the 1st movement of his piano sonata, K. 545, and prolongs the diatonic passages in the first and second themes with the voice-leadings. The neo-Riemannian theory resolves some analytical problems posed by the chromatic passages that consist of triadic but altered chords. Precisely, it is appropriate for the nineteenth-century tonality which embraces chromatic harmony to diatonic basis such as Beethoven's piano sonata, Op. 31, No. 2. Compared to the above theories for the tonal music, the basic theoretical concepts of the set theory provide a specific method to analyze the atonal music regarding the basic elements, such as interval and motive, in different ways from the precedent music. From a theoretical point of view, it is previously convenient to figure out the motivic cohesion and the unity for the segmentation of the set theory. If the analytical goal is what the composer intends to express and how he attains his compositional desire, the theories offer definite methods each of which is convenient to corresponding music, and leads in some concrete and objective results.
