Shakespeare's Venus and Adonis is a deconstruction and critical rewriting of many sources that he borrowed: Ovid's Metamorphoses, Song of Songs and the Petrarchan love lyrics, etc.. Shakespeare tries to demythologize the mythic goddess Venus and to make her pursue her shy and timid lover actively and aggressively. Shakespeare's new narrative is reversing the conventions of love lyrics and rejecting many social codes such as conventional gender role and the hierarchical order. Noam Flinker asserts that the poem is "a comic rejection of its mythic seriousness"(95). Shakespeare's Venus and Adonis is a good example of a re-writing according to the cultural spirit of a new era. In this narrative poem, Shakespeare used Ovidian stories for a highly erotic literature. The fact that Shakespeare's erotic Venus and Adonis was very popular among the contemporary readers gives big implications. Shakespeare experimented with many sources and produced a wit and unique erotica full of rich metaphors and beautiful visual imagery.
