Ethnopoetics and Parallelism Jang, Taesang Parallelism is an important device for creating poetic texts. It can be defined as the arrangement of similarly constructed clauses or sentences in verse or prose lines. The effect of parallelism is typically one of balanced correspondence achieved through repetition of identical grammatical or lex-ical elements. Lexical parallelism can also contain antithetic words. This studyclaims that ethnopoetic research on African proverb texts demonstrates two contrasting facets of parallelism. On the one hand, parallelism con-solidates the structural stability of proverb texts, but one the other it can al-so deconstruct the structure in exchange for achieving certain stylistic effects. To put it plainly, this article discusses two sub-topics: parallelism as structure and parallelism as style. Ethnopoetic attitude will be proposed and sustained throughout the discussion.
