This study was performed to evaluate the levels of urinary excretion of 1-hydroxypyrene (1-OHP) and 2- naphthol in general population with no occupational exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The subjects were 544 men who had visited a health promotion center in Busan. A questionnaire was used to obtain data about detailed smoking, drinking, food intake history and so on. 1-OHP and 2-naphthol concentrations in the collected urine were analyzed by HPLC system with a fluorescence detector. The geometric (arithmetic) means of urinary 1-OHP and 2-naphthol were 0.0055 (0.0179) μmole/mole creatinine and 0.0985 (0.4160) μmole/mole creatinine. The ranges were 0 to 0.3908 μmole/mole creatinine and 0 to 5.0762 μmole/ mole creatinine, respectively. In general population, smoking and age were significant factors to influence the urinary concentrations of 1-OHP and 2-naphthol. Smoking had a much stronger effect on urinary 1-OHP and 2-naphthol levels than age. But, the general population shows changes in 1-OHP and 2-naphthol concentrations with aging. Hence, there may be limited to apply a universal standard for the population with non-occupational exposure to PAHs, without consideration of age. It suggests that age and smoking habit need to be considered in the PAHs exposure study
