This article investigates the publications of the eighteenth-century Scottish Presbyterian pastor and author Robert Millar (1672-1752). It makes a major original contribution to scholarship by detailed analyses of the subscription lists for Millar’s published texts. We examine the socio-economic and geographic breakdown of the subscribers to the first edition of Robert Millar’s principal intellectual achievement: The History of the Propagation of Christianity(Edinburgh, 1723). We then compare the very different profile of the subscribers to The Whole Works of the Reverend Robert Millar (Paisley, 1789) to elucidate the relationship between religion and socio-economic change between the 1707 Anglo-Scottish Union and the French Revolution. The Scottish town of Paisley, as we demonstrate, embodied the profound socio-economic changes caused by British industrialization and urbanization. Robert Millar articulated a global vision for eighteenth-century Scottish Presbyterianism. Millar and his readers thus linked the local (Paisley), the national (the Scottish Presbyterian Kirk), and the global (Western Christianity to the cultures of Asia, Africa, and the Americas).
