The present essay discusses F. R. Leavis’s critical responses to Lady Chatterley’s Lover. By examining Leavis’s perspective, this essay explores the problems of the novel, the personal as well as political and cultural position of Leavis so that we can locate our theme in the topography of English culture and society.Unusual for the pioneering and ardent patron of Lawrence, Leavis hardly wavered in his reproaching stance on Lady Chatterley’s Lover. Although his view is not without some valid points to acknowledge, it is also shadowed by personal priorities and preconceptions. His devotion to moral standards, English literature and novel, and determined cultural nationalism almost nearing patriotism made him almost categorically dismiss the novel for its alleged offence against ‘Lawrence’s own’ canons. Yet this betrays his ‘cherishing’ image of Lawrence rather than a convincing evidence of ‘scrutiny’ into the fact.Leavis overlooked, among others, the significance of eros and Frieda in Lawrence. The Schwabing eroticism of Otto Gross found its way into Lawrence’s work via Frieda, and Lady Chatterley’s Lover has certainly something to be approached in this context. Contrary to Leavis’s negative value judgment on her, Frieda made, by and large, a saving and vital contribution to the novel as well as Lawrence’s life and work in general.Offended by the so-called ‘f-words’ and broad dialect, as well as uninhibited sensual scenes presented in the novel, Leavis missed the point that Lawrence, quite consciously and inevitably, chose to go for those words and experiences, in behalf of the released libidinal energy and ‘phallic reality’ as necessary process for liberation of consciousness and culture from the ‘base forcing’ of industrialism.
