This paper is an attempt to focus especially on the cultural eroticism of D. H. Lawrence since his death in 1930s, as distinct from his various literary achievements since his death in 1930, for he has not been free from the whirlpool of intense controversies over his standing as a prophet, sociologist, and writer in modern culture. In Chapter I, I will show that the negative discussions of some critics on the cultural eroticism of Lawrence since his death can be attributed to a general redirection of intellectual energies in this period away from sexual psychology and towards pressing economic and political problems.In Chapter II, I will present various cases of positive discussions from some critics over a thirty-year period since his death. The Lawrencean revival is seen as having been brought about almost single-handedly by the critical efforts of F. R. Leavis in his Scrutiny articles.In Chapter III, I will link Lawrenceanism to his cultural eroticism. I will also propose that the engagement with Lawrence is inseparable from his cultural roles and the responses they have engendered. In conclusion, I will summarize five points: first is the opportunity for critics to change their existing view to those who have been on the negative side of Lawrence; second, the true historical complexities of his engagement with the socio-economic and cultural transformation of his age; third, the relationship of eroticism to the existentional way of modern beings; fourth, the linking of the modernism of Lawrence to his social revolution, and finally, the development of postmodern hostility to scientific reason and the ‘New Age’ cultural phenomena.
