D.H. Lawrence’s characters are mostly restless and nomadic; one of them is Aaron Sisson, the protagonist in Aaron’s Rod(1922). It is no accident that Lawrence is one of Gill Deleuze’s favorite writers. This paper aims to explicate the novel under discussion from the perspective of Gill Deleuze, particularly in terms of nomadism coined by him. Deleuze’s key notions such as becoming, rhizome, and nomadism, to name a few, are highly applicable to analyzing Lawrence’s characters. Above all, Lawrence reacted against such ideas as sameness and being fixed (or the old stable ego) in favor of singularity and creativity. To begin, some motives for being nomadic in the aftermath of the First World War will be discussed. Then, this paper will chart nomadic spaces such as London and Florence. Thirdly, this paper will draw attention to rhizomic connextion leading to horizontal and unhierarchical relationships. It is well known that Lawrence had a strong objection to the possessive will which destroys a mutual respect and imposes a submission. Alternatively, Lawrence sought after a new mode of being fully charged with life-force or vitality. Aaron celebrates a spontaneous and new life in Florence, denouncing English tightness and self-consciousness. The nomadic subject refuses to be trapped by both home-comfort ideology and state (war) ideology. The importance of this study lies in identifying the common ground shared by Lawrence the writer and Deleuze the thinker, more importantly, applying Deleuzean key words to a practical analysis of the text. This fresh attempt goes beyond the existing Freudian, Feminist, and Cultural (or Political) approaches, confirming that Lawrence questions and challenges the dominant established order by creating the nomadic subject.
