Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate managers' perception and the need of vocational rehabilitation for mentally disabled people. Methods: The Jang(1995)'s questionnaire of employers' perception tool on vocational rehabilitation for mentally disabled people to collect data from 64 managers in Goyang City was used. In addition, descriptive statistics and Chi-square test were used in the data analysis. Results: Managers do not know the difference between mental illness and mental retardation, and public acts. They consider that people with mental illness are dangerous and intensive supervision is necessary because they are more likely to cause safety problems. They use the same standards on both mentally ill people and other employees for their performance evaluation and employment criteria. They stated that 2 or 4 times of vocational rehabilitation for the mentally ill is necessary. There is a significant difference in perception of the mentally ! ill depending on education level, religious background, and managerial positions. Conclusions: It is necessary to educate managers about the difference between mental illness and mental retardation, public acts, and aggression in mental illness. Managers need opportunities to meet people with mental illness and get to know them. In addition, there is need for objective vocational capacity evaluation system for local people with mental illness. Job site oriented training that actually leads to production increase should replace conventional "General training first, placement later" process. Lastly, it is important that let business owners share the value of community service by providing opportunities to the mentally ill and make managers informed with how to work with them and where to get help when problems occur.
