Influencing Factors on Depression in Elderly Residing

Purpose: The Purpose of this study was to examine influencing factors in depression in the elderly. Method: The subjects were collected by convenient sampling comprised of 578 elderly. The instrument used for this study was the Self-Rating Depression Scale(Zung, 1965) to evaluate depression. Result: The elderly's sociodemographic characteristics influencing depression were as follows; gender, age, education, Korean reading, marital state, the number of children, living with family, pocket money, financial supporter, smoking. Pocket money level showed most considerable explanation in predicting depression and here are descending series; pocket money, gender, Korean reading, smoking. marital state, financial supporter. These variables were included in total data, the explanation presented 14%. Conclusion: This study revealed economic state, education, family-related variables affected depression in elderly. Further study is required to provide intervention implementing significant modifiable factors so that depression can be early detected and managed effectively in elderly.
