Discriminating Power of Depression of Elderly Women by Arthralgia, Physical Function and Physical Self-efficacy Seo, Ji-Min1)·Kim, Myung-Hee2)·Kim, Ju-Sung3) 1) Assistant Professor, College of Nursing, Pusan National University 2) Professor, College of Nursing, Pusan National University 3) Full-time Lecturer, Department of Nursing, Silla University Purpose: The present study was conducted to examine the levels of arthralgia, physical function, physical self-efficacy and depression and to identify the discriminating power of their depression by arthralgia, physical function, physical self-efficacy on elderly women. Method: A cross-sectional survey design was used to answer the research questions. A sample consisted of 78 elderly women in Korea. The data were collected from 2004 to 2004. Descriptive and discriminant analyses were utilized. Result: Korean elderly women experienced middle levels of arthralgia, physical function, physical self-efficacy and depression. The subjects were distributed in three groups of depression: 17 subjects (21.8%) in non-depressed group, 40 subjects (51.3%) in mild-depressed group and 21 subjects (26.9%) in severe-depressed group. Arthralgia, physical function and physical self-efficacy were significant discriminating factors for depression of elderly women. Arthralgia, physical function and physical self-efficacy correctly discriminated 60.3% of the sample. Conclusion: Based on the findings of this study, developing managemental intervention programs and examining the effects of the program for elderly women to reduce their depression are suggested.
