Residential segregation has been dealt with as a major urban problem under the notion that one? residential position has significant influence on his/her accessibility to urban resources. There have been different frameworks on why segregation persists. However, their theoretical backgrounds in the urban theories are not explicitly discussed yet. The paper attempts to show how segregation frameworks are derived from the urban theories with an example of racial/ethnic segregation in U.S cities. It begins with a definition of neighborhood and different ways of conceptualizing it. And then it discusses various driving forces and processes of neighborhood changes shown in urban form models. Also, it reviews the racial/ethnic segregation frameworks in U.S cities - spatial assimilation, place stratification, and resurgent ethnicity - with their major argument and supporting evidences. It ends with a summary discussion that links neighborhood, neighborhood change, and urban forms with segregation. The paper shows each segregation framework is linked to different urban theories, being different in conceptualizing a neighborhood and understanding the driving forces and processes of neighborhood changes.
