This paper explores ethical issues that arise from utilizing “mental mapping” as a visual research method, drawing on a study of women immigrants who had moved to South Korea through commercially arranged marriages. It discusses the potential of the method, particularly in promoting participants’ agency and authorship in research processes. The efforts of the researcher to cede power in research processes to the participants contributed to the project having fuzzy boundaries where the participants were co-producers of knowledge, even though, for a range of reasons, it proved difficult to acknowledge participants as co-authors. The barriers included institutional expectations attached to university-based research and the participants’ reluctance to be publicly identified by family and neighbors. The researcher was pushed to navigate ethical and practical issues arising between anonymity and authorship, and suggest flexible approaches for acknowledging authorship.
