The historical change of the imperfect 1st person singular cohortative form between SBH and LBH had been observed by some early Biblical Hebrew scholars and the phenomenon has been recently defined as an LBH feature by Polzin and others. However, a systematic and detailed research in the subject in Biblical and extra-Biblical sources has been in need. The present work investigates all relevant occurrences of Imperf. 1 Per. Sing. cohortave usage in Biblical Hebrew(SBH and LBH respectively), in Qumran Hebrew and in Mishnaic Hebrew. The study shows that the usage of Imperf. 1 Per. Sing. cohortave form with –ah (cohortative ה) decreases by more than 50% between SBH and LBH. And this diminution is attested by statistic data, and by concrete examples as well. Some of comparable texts between Chronicles and their Vorlage or between LBH and SBH sources provide clear cases in which the cohortative ה disappears. This diachronic change is also found in Qumran Hebrew sources. Obvious examples for the change are attested by Dead Sea scroll of Isaiah. The comparison between Masoretic text and the scroll clearly shows that the Hebrew of 1QIsaa tends to avoid cohortative ה. The same phenomenon is also observed in the Hebrew of Ben-Sira. In Mishnah one finds that the cohortative ה is not in use any more. The investigation shows that the usage of Imperf. 1 Per. Sing. cohortave form with –ah (cohortative ה) is sharply reduced in LBH and the decrease intensifies in the following phases of Classical Hebrew until its complete disappearance in Mishnaic Hebrew.
