This paper examines the issues of identity, center and periphery, Huaxia(華夏) and borderlands, and the power of narrative through the Jiulong(九隆) mythology of Yunnan(雲南) Ailaoyi(哀牢夷). First, this paper examines the transition of Jiulong mythology through the records of Huayangguoji(華陽國志), Houhanshu(後漢書), Jigudianshuoji(紀古滇說集), Baigutongj(白古通記), and so on. Then, this paper critically examines the research trends in Chinese Academy on the Jiulong mythology.
The Jiulong mythology of Ailaoyi had been accepted as the founding myth of Nanzhao (南詔) and Dali(大理), and secured the unique identity of the Yunnan area. On the other hand, today, it is no exaggeration to say that the interpretation of the Jiulong mythology converges into the magnetic field of "the Chinese Nation of Plurality and Unity". There are the Jiulong mythology in the world where Yunnan was the center, and the Jiulong mythology in today"s China which inherited the heritage of the Chinese empire; the Jiulong mythology which lies in different time and space generates a completely different meaning. Therefore, these contexts are more important than the Jiulong mythology in itself. It is the intention of this work to reveal the gap of the these different contexts.
