The purpose of this study was to compare the relationship between grip strength and BMI and examine the effect of obesity on grip strength in 455 elderly men and women aged 65~84 years old. The subjects were 65~74 years old, male and female aged (71.2±2.3 yrs, n=85) and 70.6±2.5 yrs, n=154), and 75~84 years old were divided into male and female aged (78.3±2.3 yrs, n=79) and female aged (77.8±2.4 yrs, n=137). In addition, BMI was divided into normal weight group (18.5~23.0 kg/㎡), overweight group (23~25 kg/㎡) and obese group(over 25 kg/㎡) for the classification of obesity (WHO, 2000). Body weights were measured using a scale (CAS, Korea) and kidney using an extensometer (Takei, Japan). BMI was calculated by weight and height. The grip strength was determined by alternating the dominant side and the non-dominant side two times using a dynamometer (GRIP-D 5101; TAKEI, Co., Japan). Statistical methods were independent t-test, Pearson"s product correlation, and one-way ANOVA. As a result, the grip of the dominant side and the non-dominant side of the male elderly group was higher than that of the female elderly group and decreased with increasing age(p<.05). There was a significant correlation between grip strength and BMI on the dominant side in 75~85 years old (p<.05). Also, the male overweight group had a significantly higher grip on the dominant side than the normal weight group (p<.05). It is suggested that the grip strength according to the age increase of the elderly is a reliable indicator of the evaluation tool. However, it suggests that errors in predicting the health status of the male elderly according to the BMI classification may occur.
