This study examines pragmatic aspects of the use of NP-sentences, focusing on the properties of the registers in which they are uttered. The three subtypes of NP-sentences, which are entity-introduction, news-closing, and narrative-development, are not homogeneous in their distribution not only in the scope of news but also in other registers. NP-sentences are used frequently without any constraints in the register of abstract hearers where speakers and hearers barely interact. The registers of newspaper articles sharing many properties with TV news show rather restrictive distribution of NP-sentences by contrast. Registers where all the types are used include narrations from TV educational programs and current affairs programs. Casual conversation permits the 1st type exclusively, and descriptions of actions in a scenario and sports broadcasting show the 1st and 3rd types together. In general, NP-sentences are most universally used in formal, planned, and one-sided spoken language. The comparison between TV news and newspaper articles show that the factor of medium, that is the difference between speech and writing, among various factors, is judged to be the crucial property that is closely involved in the use of NP-sentences.
