Food security is crucial in attaining sustainable and inclusive development. Goal 2 of the Sustainable Development Goals aims for Zero Hunger; Goal 3 strives for Good Health and Well‐Being while Goal 12 promotes Responsible Consumption and Production. Food security is said to exist when all people, at all times, have physical and economic access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food that meets their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life (FAO 1996).
In the ASEAN community, food security remains an overriding concern because it is affected by both short and long‐term factors. Teng (2013) lists these factors: population growth, changing patterns of food consumption arising from rapid urbanization, shrinking agricultural land, declining agricultural productivity, constraints in natural resource utilization, the negative impacts of global warming and climate change on agricultural productivity and rural livelihoods, unstable prices of food prices and oil‐based chemical inputs and the rapid transformation of agricultural and food supply chains.
