As an Old Testament scholar, Chan Kook Kim was arrested on charges of ‘National Democratic Youth Student Federation incident’ in 1974, and released after 10 months. Immediately after his release in 1975, a lecture on the March 1 Independence Movement of 1919 was held to welcome the professors freed by the National Christian Professor Fellowship. At this time, Byung Mu Ahn’s lecture “Nation, Minjung (People), and the Church” marked the birth of the Minjung theology by addressing the task of the church to discover the minjung as the actual subject of history and to testify to the voice of the minjung. In that lecture, Byung Mu Ahn called Chan Kook Kim a witness to the voice of the minjung. It was an appraisal of Kim’s life and theology, and at the same time, foreshadowed the journey of his life and theology. The happiness of that moment was shortlived. Not long after, Kim was dismissed from his professorship. Over the course of the next ten years of suffering until he was reinstated in 1984, Chan Kook Kim’s life as a theologian was focused on testifying to the voice of the minjung.
Despite recent works looking at his life Chan Kook Kim’s theology has not yet been properly examined. This article illuminates the Minjung theology of Chan Kook Kim as a witness to the times in which he lived the voice of the minjung in the ‘minjung’s era.’ At the same time, it attempts to rediscover the abundant legacy of Minjung theology, which can not be said to be the original accomplishment of one or two people. This article first confirms what the subject of Minjung theology is and then confirms what significance Chan Kook Kim’s theological achievement, and finally, how his theology makes a unique contribution to Minjung theology.
