There is a group of words in Korean, which are composed of a Sino Korean base compound and a Native Korean root. A salient property is that the latter is a synonym of the second member of the base compound. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the properties of such words and provide a formal analysis within the framework of Distributed Morphology (Halle & Marantz 1993). I argue that the expressions under question are instances of "semantically vacuous semantic reduplication (SVSR)" by showing that reduplication does not alter the meaning of the base compound and the target of reduplication is the meaning of one of the root member of the base compound. I propose to treat the derivation of SVSR as involving endocentric root merger and post-syntactic operations such as Copy and Impoverishment rule, the latter of which serves the purpose of form dissimilation of the synonymous SK and NK roots. I further show that compound-like behaviors exhibited by SVSR straightforwardly follow from the proposed analysis. Lastly, I show that other expressions that seem to be instances of SVSR are in fact regular lexical phrases, composed by regular syntactic operations.
