Researches on collective behavior have been done in numerous perspectives and through various methodologies, such as observing collective behavior with macroscopic or microscopic perspective, or analyzing its meaning or aspect socially, economically, politically or psychologically. The aspects of collective behaviors appear in various shapes in order to reach ‘revolution’ to abolish previous regulations and build new social or political system from simple meaning of ‘crowd’ where many individuals are gathered as in modern society, collective behaviors online are becoming critical issues.
Čapek often shows collective behaviors through his works and depicts collective behavior from human society through literature. Through Čapek"s R.U.R. and The White Disease, we can understand the meaning of collective behaviors through the behaviors of robots, which could also be considered as the image of crowd, and individual group"s importance.
Based on the meaning of crowd defined by Canetti, robots are similar to the crowds united with one goal. Men manufacturing and dominating them were the original structures, however, robots raised war in order to fulfill their only purpose, which is to destroy humans. Robots with identical images gather with their increasing number to attack humans that yields a clear image of crowd. Robot may only be a machine, but it is practically the reflection of a man, while the image of crowd is not that different from the image of robots.
A group of people contrasts with robots, since their goal is to produce robots to release humans from labors and build utopia that they have dreamed of. However, as the world"s image that they hoped for does not follow their plans, the group loses their pursuit. The crowd"s loss of pursuit is followed by disbandment.
In the work of The White Disease, there is the general characteristics of the crowd, which responds quickly and easily to external stimulus as a slave of immediate impulse. Due to its anonymity, crowd does not feel any obligations and does not hesitate to show aggressive behaviour. Meeting reckless young people with a desire for the destruction of the crowd provokes the tragic ending, because the crowd kills Dr. Galen, who could save the Marshal’s life and defend the state before the war.
Čapek often asks the questions of human existence and nature in his works. He showed, how dangerous it would be when people live as robots(automaton) without their own thinking or opinion. In the thirties, when fascism was spread like a plaque and war cloud was hanging over Europe, he alerted people to rethink the importance and function of the crowd and collective behaviour, which could have a big impact on the government or on the whole world.
