Minhwas, originating from the court paintings of the Joseon Dynasty and proliferating in the late Joseon Dynasty (18th and 19th centuries), are highly practical Korean Chaesaekhwas (polychrome paintings) that were decorative court paintings. However, it is worth noting that Minhwas and decorative court paintings have different characteristics, and a closer examination of the decorative court paintings, which had been the best painting arts of the Joseon period, is required. This paper aims to analyze not only the symbolic meanings but also the colors applied in decorative court paintings; splendid colors were used to depict many ceremonies and events of the Joseon Dynasty in these paintings. In addition, decorative court paintings that proactively adopted interior decorations are valuable sources of information on Joseon arts and can be used in various fields, including the creative design development of Korean traditional and modern culture. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct a color analysis and other investigations on decorative court paintings. In this paper, we propose color palettes of our traditional decorative court paintings by exploring symbolic meanings and color extraction and conducting color analyses on well-known artworks, such as the Sun, Moon and Five Peaks, the Ten Longevity Symbols, the Eight Confucian Virtues, and Chaekado (the Scholar’s Accouterments), hoping to promote the beauty of our culture around the world and provide a reference material for color design research in the future.
