The purpose of this paper is to explore why Korean students generally experience difficulty in acquiring and comprehending English relative clause constructions, despite the great number of relative clauses in their own language. In order to do this, the author examines a Korean short novel and two English translations produced by a native Korean speaker and a native English speaker respectively, along with texts written by Korean students in university English classes. Results show that the Korean students experienced difficulty with the English relative clauses, even though c. 50% of the Korean text consisted of relative clauses. Three interrelated factors are suggested for this: Alternative Expressions, Syntactic Differences, and Avoidance. Of these, the most important factor appears to be the syntactic differences between English and Korean relative clauses.
