The purpose of this paper is two-folds: (i) to examine whether frequency affects the phonological irregularity of English place-names ending in -wick, and (ii) to investigate whether the process is productive or not. The place-names ending in -wick are hardly predictable to pronounce properly by their orthography only. For example, Warwick is pronounced as [wɔrɪk], instead of [wɔrwɪk], while Gatwick is pronounced as [gætwɪk]. Examples like Alnwick and Keswick, pronounced as [ænɪk] and [kɛzɪk], respectively, also exhibit unpredictable pronunciation. Based on the data collected from BNC, I conducted a survey experiment using written forms to answer the research questions, focusing on/w/-deletion. The responses were analysed by a statistical method to investigate the frequency effect and productivity. The result is that frequency affects the condition of stem-final/r/ only and other conditions are not influenced by frequency effect, and the morpho-phonological process in the English place-names is productive, although the overall rate of/w/-deletion is not considerably high.
