Since the early 1990s, Korean society, which has traditionally maintained national homogeneity, has been rapidly transformed into a multicultural society with the steady increase of foreigners, married immigrants and foreign workers. As a result, the number of students from multicultural families is also increasing rapidly, providing an opportunity to change the direction of Korean education to ‘the recognition of difference among members of community from different social backgrounds and the respect for diversity’. In order to cope with those changes, it is the World literature education that can be useful. World literature education has an educational significance in that it could practically affect on the direction of Korean education, emphasizing a sense of community based on mutual respect and the mutual understanding by rejecting prejudice and discrimination. In this study, based on the above, the goals of the discussion are set as follows. First, the status change of world literature education in Korean language education is critically examined. Second, the principles of content construction of world literature education based on ’mutual culture’ as a way to develop world literature education in Korean language education is to be developed and presented. Third, actual education contents with the developed principles is to be made as to find educational practices in the field. Thus, the principles of contents construction of World literature education were derived as follows. First, it is the formation of a sense of heterogeneity through the experience of World literature. Second, it is the formation of a sense of identity through the experience of World literature. Third, it is the pursuit of intercultural ties through sympathy.
