Leisure research is a relatively new area of inquiry in the US as well as around the world. The first journals in the U.S. focusing primarily on leisure research began less than 40 years ago. Since that time, the research addressing various leisure-related phenomena has grown in quantity and quality. The purpose of this paper is to examine the leisure research published in the U.S. in the Journal of Leisure Research and Leisure Sciences in recent decades. This analysis shows the evolution of theory and methods as researchers have addressed concerns raised. For example, early research focused predominantly on outdoor recreation management while leisure behavior in its broadest form applied to a diversity of populations has become more common today. Further, early research used primarily quantitative methods and statistics but a growing number of recent studies use qualitative approaches to examine leisure behavior. In addition, the past history points to issues and challenges for the future such as including more researchers worldwide in the dialogue, applying the research to improve the lives of people, expanding the methods available, and determining relevant topics that require more exploration.
