The purpose of this study is to properly understand the Korean people through proper study of the leisure during the Japanese Colonial Rule Period. For this end, this study investigated leisure-related books, various customs data, and materials from newspapers and on the Internet materials during the Japanese Colonial Rule Period through a literature research. As a result, the following conclusions have been obtained: First, as for Korean people`s leisure during the Japanese Colonial Rule Period, the negative aspects of leisure were remarkable, because of the sense of losing and a feeling of helplessness. Also, the separation of leisure took place, due to the differences in cultural benefits between rural areas and cities, and this phenomenon worked as a factor to cause people from the rural areas to surge into urban areas. Second, mountain climbing, fishing, and Korean card game(Hwatoo) were introduced as new entertainments during the Japanese Colonial Rule Period. The decline of the ole learned people took place, and new learned people emerged during the period. In the art circles, the concepts of the Western and Oriental paintings were newly introduced. Third, Japan thoroughly oppressed the Korean people`s peculiar leisure activities through cultural and political oppression, land survey project and summary decision of crimes. Especially, Japanese colonists stole the land, which is the foundation of village communities, and disintegrated the economic basis, which is essential to joint labor, paying tributes to village god, and memorial services of village. Fourth, Korean people`s peculiar "Gye", instrumental music of farmers, "Durey", and other activities on music were thoroughly controlled and dwindled away by the Japanese colonists` oppression. In the late 1930s, a new reconstruction campaign of leisure appeared. The most important reason why Japan oppressed Korean people`s leisure was to erase the spirit of Korean people. Korean people had kept our own things hard during the difficult times. We should try to look for our own things even now.
