The purpose of this study was to identify the difference in the effect of physical activity promotion program on obesity related variables according to the obesity level in male university students. Subjects were divided into three groups according to the obesity level by BMI; one was obesity group (OBG, n=17), the other overweight group (OWG, n=18), the third normal weight group (NOG, n=20). Physical activity promotion program was practiced once a week, 120 min. with the intensity under 80% of predicted HR max for 15 weeks. Subjects were encouraged by e-mail to promote the physical activity, and to prohibit the unnecessary energy intake in the rest times. BMI and WHR related variables, % body fat, blood lipid profile were measured before and after attending the program, respectively. After 15-week-physical activity promotion program, waist girth (p<.05), % body fat (p<.05), total cholesterol concentration (p<.001) were significantly decreased in OBG. Body weight (p<.01), BMI (p<.01), waist girth (p<.01), hip girth (p<.001), % body fat (p<.05), total cholesterol concentration (p<.05), triacylglyceride concentration (p<.001) were significantly decreased in OWG. And waist girth (p<.001), hip girth (p<.001), WHR (p<.05), % body fat (p<.001), triacylglyceride concentration (p<.01) were significantly decreased in NOG. However the results of all obesity related variables in OBG were higher (negative) than those in OWG and NOG. In conclusion, the lower BMI, the better the effect of physical activity promotion program. And it was suggested that obesity prevention and therapeutic program should be intervened at least before BMI=25.
