The aim of the music in recreation is to have an eye for beauty in music. There is no substantial difference between the music in recreation consisting of singing, playing, composing, appreciation and the music as fine arts. But not a few recreation leaders exhibit their gross ignorance of the two. Most of the recreation leaders confine the field of music to singing the popular music. It is necessary to straighten out this point. Music may be approached from several points of view. For some people it is a profession and a life work ; for some it serves as a part of religious service ; for others it is a business or commercial enterprise ; but for most it is a form of recreation. Music is almost without a peer as a medium for recreation. Its appeal is so wide and its possibilities so infinite that its recreational potentialities can never be exhausted. Experience in music brings both immediate and long-range satisfaction. The more a person knows about music, the more he wants to learn, and the more pleasure he gains from it. The responsibility for directing the musical experience of all segments of the population lies with the recreation leader. But many recreation leaders today have little conception of the vital role music can and should play in their recreation programs. A clear understanding of the role of the leader in the music phase of the recreation program will assist hire in contributing to the effectiveness of recreation through music. The recreation leader should be aware of the recreationl possibilities of music. He should cultivate his own interest in music and develop his innate musical capacities. He should level up his knowledges, techniques and directing methods about music. He should discover and utilize ail the human resources available to him, including professional musicians and music educators who are interested in recreation and qualified to work in that area. It is essential that the different music activities in the recreation program be well integrated. The instrumental and vocal ensembles can contribute to the listening program. The main program in music among singing, playing, composing and listening for the lay people is listening ar appreciation. In developing the listening program, the leader must explore for himself the pleasure of listening to music and learn as much about if as possible. It is his responsibility to arrange and publicize concerts and recitals, plan regularly scheduled programs of recorded music, organize music appreciation classes. I suggest the practical method and the new remedy for the appreciation of music to the recreation leader and who have an interest in recreation.
