KARI is working on the development of OBCP execution engine based on Lua to enhance the spacecraft autonomy. OBCPs are script-like computer programs to control the spacecraft. Lua is a lightweight scripting language written in ANSI C standards. As flight software developed by KARI is written in C, Lua can be easily integrated to flight software. It also provides the interfaces to C functions to communicate with the rest of the flight software. Those are why Lua is adopted for OBCP description language. The OBCP engine shall be able to execute multiple OBCPs concurrently as if a ground operator is on-board. Lua does not support multithreading because Lua coroutines cannot be preempted outside coroutines. Lua debugging hook, however, allows to pause and to resume Lua coroutines. In this paper, we analyze two ways of concurrent scheduling of Lua-based OBCPs. One way is to use Lua coroutines with Lua debugging hook. Lua debugging hook, however, is not recommended for performance issue. We estimated the overhead of Lua debugging hook and concluded that the overhead is acceptable for space program. The other way is to use the round-robin scheduling provided by Real-Time Operating System, VxWorks. There is no overhead for task switching, but it causes frequent task switching when Lua dynamically allocates memory during script loading. For the future work, dynamic memory allocation issue shall be addressed to guarantee memory safety of OBCP engine.
