This study aims to provide a grasp about the death of Andrey in ‘War and Peace’ in regard of the Sublime from the perspective of the Modernism and the Post-Modernism. The Sublime concept of Modernism that originated from Emanuel Kant embodied the enlightening Utopia that approaches universal moral law from an idealistic perspective. On the other hand, the same idea from Post-Modernism, that focuses on Lyotard’s idea, yearns for the individual autonomy by presentation of ‘indescribable world’ of ‘this moment’.
Therefore, the variation of the meaning of the Sublime from the autonomy to the universality, is a key description to elaborate the prospect of awareness of Andrey, who sought for the truth of life. Particularly, regarding a fact that one of the main causes of the Sublime is closely related to a hardly formalizable death, the writer intends to shed light to the significance of the Sublime that comes from the death of Andrey.
In conclusion, the death of Andrey in Austerlitz is a sublime experience that refreshes the moral law of God’s love. On the other hand, the finalized death is a moment of confirmation of individual autonomy. Likewise, the death of Andrey in ‘War and Peace’ embodies the ontological strife that goes back and forth between ‘the nature and the liberation.’
