In this article, the history of ATIS, Allied Translator & Interpreter Section, as well as its primary mission of surveying, capturing, analyzing and transporting North Korean documents are examined. And additionally, determining a general system based upon types and categories featured in those captured NK documents are attempted here as well.
It became possible to examine captured North Korean documents since the 2000s, and that encouraged studies of North Korean history (as well as Contemporary history of South and North Koreas in general) to say the least. Yet studies in this area still have not been able to identify who actually collected all these documents and in what manner it was done. All we know is about a task force named as ‘Indianhead’ which was arguably and supposedly responsible for securing documents of such sort.
Yet considering the limited time period during which this Indianhead unit was actually in operation, it seems highly possible that a bulk of NK documents we have today could have been collected by another agency or military unit. Examined in this article is the role which could have been played by the aforementioned ATIS, which was an Intelligence branch for the Southwest Pacific Command that oversaw operations in the Pacific region during the second World War. Research indicates that this agency actually operated along the Korean front during the Korean War, and played a major role in securing North Korean documents.
During the war, ATIS dispatched its own field unit called ADVATIS to the Korean frontline, and by collecting enemy documents and interrogating prisoners it managed to gather crucial intelligence, such as information regarding the enemy’s battle readiness, operation plans, details of logistics, while even contributing to the war effort by engaging itself in psychological warfare and sabotage. The unit also collected and categorized all documents and interrogation records which involved either North Korean soldiers or those of the Chinese People’s Army, into categories like ‘Tactical Intelligence’ and ‘Geographic Intelligence.’
Further study of ATIS seems more than necessary as this agency, after the Korean liberation and through the Korean war, must have been in charge of strategically important tasks like gathering intelligence on Communist states, interrogation of North Korean and Chinese prisoners of war, and processing & analyzing captured documents, while operating on the Korean peninsula and Japan.
