Purpose: This study aims to explore effects of group language therapy using theatre activities on narrative skills of school-aged children from multicultural families. Methods: We firstly selected children whose lexical ability was delayed (<–1.5 SD) depending on the receptive and expressive vocabulary test(Kim, Hong, & Kim, 2010). After collecting narrative discourse data of these children by story retelling test using The Tortoise and Hare, a group language therapy using theatre activities was performed for participants for 16 sessions. Each session was consisted of one hour program. After 16 session therapy, we recollected narrative discourse data of the participants in the same way. Finally, we compared narrative skills of participants depending on the narrative discourse data collected before and after therapy. For macrostructure, we analyzed the use rates of story grammar elements. For microstructure, we analyzed cohesive markers (connective ending, special particles, particles, conjunctive adverb), discourse length (T-unit, NTW), lexical diversity (NDW), and sentence length(MLT-w). Results: After the group language therapy, the length of narrative discourse and lexical diversity of participants significantly increased. However, other variables such as story grammar elements and cohesive devices did not significantly increased, even if those mean rates were a little more improved. Conclusions: These findings showed that the elements such as discourse length and lexical diversity respond more quickly to the group language therapy using theatre activities, but narrative elements were not. These results implicates that more long-term group language therapy program will be useful for improving narrative skills of children.
