Spanish possessives seem to share little in common with Korean possessives regarding their grammatical properties -except the function of referring to the possessor by the grammatical person- as the same is true of materials belonging to many other categories in these languages. However, Korean possessives can be classified into two groups that differ from each other in their behavior, which is reminiscent of the distinction of strong and deficient possessives of Spanish (in general, of Romance languages). This paper aims to make a better account of the grammatical parallelism of possessives in Spanish and Korean by developing a contrastive analysis, as well as to put forth a more encompassing crosslinguistic approach to the category of possessive pronouns.
