This study, as a primary attempt to elucidate the spatial behavior of Korean firms, aims to examine location, location decision-making and material linkages of electronics firms. In order to consider the effects of the characteristics of individual firms upon their spatial behavior, firms are divided into several groups according to firm size, products, ownership and region where plant is located, respectively. Current conditions and geographical distributions of the electronics industry are examined based on the data derived from the directory of EIAK(Electronics Industries Assocition of Korea) and other several published materials. Location decision-making, location factors and material linkages of the electronics firms are analysed based on data derived from interview and questionnaire surveys conducted by the author from August to December 1986. The results of the study can be summarized as follows. Firstly, before the late 1960s, the electronics plants were heavily concentrated upon Seoul and Busan. Especially, no less than 82 percent of the industry`s total number of plants were located in Seoul. Since the 1970s, this remarkable spatial concentration upon Seoul has relatively begun to decline. Seoul and its surrounding Kyeonggi Province account for more than 70 percent of total number of plants in 1978 and 1986. Size of plants and sector of the industry play an important role in plant location. For example, larger plants and parts & component manufacturers show more dispersed pattern. Secondly, selection of plant location is decisded by only a few authoritative members of firms, within the limitation of time and funds. Generally, less than three specific sites are seriously considered in the location decision making process. Ordinarily the search for new sites is done within the area of one province (Do). Moreover, only a very short time -less than a year-is available for searching and selecting a site. Larger firms tend to consider larger area for searching than the smaller ones. The size of area for searching also varies according to sector or region. Location factors such as availability of labour Wes. appropriateness of the price of she, access to parts & component, access to markets are considered importantly in the site selection. The importance of some location factors, however, varies according to the firm size and sector. In final choice of the plant location, such location factors as the price of site or building, avoidance of complicated administrative procedures and government policies are more seriously considered than those mentioned above. Thirdly, the material linkages of electronics firms are, on the whole, overseas oriented. However, the local linkages (linkages within the city or county where the plant is located) are relatively more important than the regional or national linkages within the nation, especially in the purchasing linkages. The local linkages vary significantly according to firm size, sector, ownership and region. For example, local linkages are more important for small and medium firms than for large firms; those firms which manufacture the part & components have more non-local linkages than the other two sectors; foreign firms show far more overseas linkages in purchases and sales than domestic or joint-venture firms; and firms located in Seoul show higher local linkages than the firms located in other regions.
