The parameter estimation method which directly computes the elemental constitutive parameters of structures from the measured static responses is presented. The equation error and the response error method are used to estimate the parameters of the structural member. The results of the two methods are compared with each other. A complete mathematical development is presented for the techniques. Following this developments the method were numerically calculated using a series of experiments with an example of truss configurations. Utilizing these analytical methods the truss member stiffnesses was identified using the applied forces and measured displacements. The response error method is superior to the equation error method because of the fewer measurements of displacements in evaluation of the stiffnesses of the structural member. This method is capable of determining changes in structural element stiffnesses, including element failure. The identified cross-sectional properties of the structural elements can be used for damage assessment and to determine the structure`s load-carrying capacity of the structure.
