This research aimed at reviewing Byeulgeub custom of Jeju island, which took the married women(daughters-in-law) as the receivers, focusing on ‘Choalil Byulgeub Mungi’ of Jeju area during late Joseon, furthermore, discussing the process of acknowledging women as important agents in marriage and inheritance. For this, this research analyzed huge amount of old documents of Gujwa Kimhae Kim Family Kim Deokgyeong family, newly discovered, and the old documents of other families of Jeju area. To investigate Choalil Byulgeub custom will acknowledge women as important agents from gender viewpoint, and contribute to reconstitution of their status in family system based on this.
Choalil Byulgeub Mungi is a useful document to reconstitute marriage and inheritance custom of Jeju area, which well shows the characteristic of inheritance of Jeju island. This document was composed after a certain period, not immediately before or after marriage, taking the women(daughters-in-law) as the receivers. Every married woman was the receiver of Choalil Byulgeub, which was conducted regardless of the order of the husband(whether of eldest son) or number of marriage(whether or remarriage) in family rank. Also they had to compose documents. This way, the point that Choalil Byulgeub was established as a formal and obligatory custom implies that married women exerted efforts in socioeconomic field with definite expectation for future such as inheritance, not mere passive receivers.
