In line with the paradigm of pursuing variability and interactions with architecture, color is expanding its role as a factor that can recognize the visual change of the work without changing the actual structure of the building. Many architects are using light as an element that can maximize these visual color changes. It can affect the spatial color rather than the functional characteristics of light, provided that it enables people to interact with the environment through experience of various emotions. To investigate spatial emotional characteristics of light, this study compared eighteen lighting spaces and eighteen color glass spaces. These spaces were measured with ten pairs of emotional characteristics, and the hue and lightness of each space were measured to analyze the correlation between space and emotional characteristics. The emotional characteristics that affects the hue is the lexical group representing ‘the attributes’ of ‘natural – artificial’, ‘feminine – masculine’, ‘high-tech – classical’. The emotional characteristics that affects the lightness is the lexical group representing ‘the weight’ of ‘light – heavy’, ‘active – passive’, ‘hard – soft’. The emotional characteristics affected by both hue and lightness is the lexical group representing ‘atmosphere’ of ‘rational – emotional’, ‘gorgeous – simple’, ‘fantastic – realistic’, ‘unique – ordinary’. This study analyzed the relationship between emotional characteristics that changes by the light transformation, and it will serve as a useful resource for hue and lightness application in the context of space design.
