Wedding planners play a pivotal role in the growing wedding consultation industry. This study aims to (1) identify the competencies wedding planners are required to have; (2) compare wedding planners` perceived importance and performance of their competencies; and (3) examine whether significant differences exist perceived importance and performance of competencies depending on the environment that they work in. A total of 230 questionnaires were distributed, and 198 of them were collected. Of those that were collected, 190 questionnaires were used for data analyses, where those that had missing values were excluded. As a result of the study, wedding planners` competencies included six domains, such as situational adaptability, negotiation skills, foreign language skills, expert knowledge, creativity/promptness to customers` request and communication skills. All domains of competencies showed significant differences between the perceived importance and performance. In addition, there were significant differences on the importance and performance each depending on working environment such as career as wedding planner, type of hiring, size of the company that they work, and the position they hold within the company. The results of this study can be utilized as valuable information to those applying to be a wedding planner, or presented to a wedding planner in order to compare and evaluate their own competencies. This study would positive affect wedding consulting companies and the wedding service industry, because it can contribute to the planning and development of education programs that focus on increasing the competencies of wedding planners.
