Since the 1980s a responsible form of tourism has emerged as an alternative to contemporary mass tourism, Responsible tourism (RT) has been recognized as a significant factor within the tourism domain, triggering an increase in the research focusing on this topic. This study investigates responsible tourist behavior using the Theory of Planned Behavior by incorporating pro-social behavior and perception of RT in the context of RT. A quota sampling method was employed based on gender, age, and residential district. The data were analyzed using structural equation modeling with SPSS and AMOS. The results revealed that pro-social behavior had significant effects on responsible attitude of tourists, intention to travel responsibly, and their behavior in RT. Pro-social behavior played an important role in predicting responsible tourist behavior. Belief in the benefits of RT had positive significant impacts on the attitude of tourists and subjective norm in responsible travel. In addition, tourists’ perception of RT significantly influenced their perceived behavioral control in RT. Subjective norm and perceived behavioral control in RT had an effect on intention to travel responsibly, which influenced tourist behavior in RT. Notably, intention to travel responsibly was the most important antecedent of predicting responsible tourist behavior. The study contributes to new knowledge of responsible tourist behavior and suggests marketing strategies to promote RT to tourists and stakeholders.
