This study was conducted to elucidate and to model the dynamics of capillary rise of water in various papers using the Klemm method. Dynamics of water absorption by capillary rise in various papers such as fine paper, newsprint, tissues, and color paper were measured and the relationships between the Klemm method and other sizing test methods were evaluated. It was found that the dynamics of water absorption in paper by capillary rise can be modelled using the first order process model and thus the first order transfer function. The Klemm sizing degree had a high positive correlation (r=0.98) with the process gain K of the water absorption model while it has a negative correlation (r=-0.67) with the time constant τ, meaning that the transfer rate of water was faster when the height of water absorption was higher. Klemm sizing degree was highly influenced by bulk and ash content of paper, and contact angle of water on paper. Correlation coefficients between each sizing test methods were not so high, meaning that any sizing degree test method can not represent all methods and a proper testing method shall be selected considering the purpose of usage.
