This article concerns clinical social work theory and practice with Korean American families suffering from child abuse in Chicago, and future aspects of those child abuse issues on emotional wellbeing of older family members. The tendency of respect for the authority of parents thwarts Korean children`s spontaneity and ability to reveal their true thoughts and inner feeling in front of parents who are perceived to be authority figures. The authoritarian Korean parents expect their children to obey without question and to submit to a family structure that makes decisions for children as extensions of parents. As the period of residence continues, children of immigrants can assimilate more quickly than their parents and often begin to view their ethnic culture as inferior to that of the dominant community, which may cause a serious gap between the two generations. A clash may form as children struggle for greater independence and parents struggle for control, which may lead to emotional and even physical abuse of children. Therapists need to avoid therapeutic language terms such as sickness, guilt, and anxiety, and needs to develop more Confucian-oriented words such as losing harmony or balance, reciprocal responsibility or obligation, and fate, to neutralize the client`s excessive guilt and family responsibility and make Korean clients feel more relaxed and understood in the treatment process. In this study, a basic type of informal support system is recommended to be developed for the child abuse families with older parents living together. Such informal network may start in the form of counselling children, parents, and older grandparents, in an effort to alleviate intergenerational conflicts on the complicated consequences of disciplinary tradition and emotional anguishes.
