The present paper deals with a comparative study on the difference by areas in rural and urban communities in the relationship between the effects and variables of social resources of the elderly who live alone upon their suicidal ideation with depression set forth as media. For this aim, questionnaires were distributed to 326 aged 65 and more across the country. A structure equation model analysis was used as a measurement. The major outcomes of the studies could be summed up as follows:First, the social environment of the local communities as social resources of the elderly living alone and social support for them turned out to have no direct influence upon their suicidal ideation. Second, the depression of the elderly living alone was found to exercise no direct impact upon suicidal ideation of the elderly living alone. Third, it became clear, however, that the social environment of the local communities as social resources of the elderly living alone and social support for them exerted certain amount of effects on their suicidal ideation with depression as a mediator. Fourth, from comparison of the models by areas (rural and urban) by means of multi-group analysis, it was made obvious that such models could be applied to all senior people who live alone except for the channel through which social environment of the local communities exerts influence upon their depression. Based on these outcomes of the study, discussed were realistic and political intervention measures to prevent suicide of the elderly who live alone and to promote their mental health.
