The present study aims to identify factors associated with preferences of elderly about social supports in an urban area of Korea. The preferences of elderly about social supports are rarely investigated. This study is designed to develop measure the preferences and identify basic factors associated with the preferences. The research design is a cross-sectional survey with random sampling method. The response rate is approximately 94%. In order to confirm the validity and reliability of the preference measurement that the author developed, factor analysis and reliability of the preference(Cronbach`s Alpha) were conducted. T-test and one-way ANOVA were performed in order to identify the factors associated with the preferences. As a result of the factor analysis, the author confirmed the validity and sub-scales of the preferences. However, one finding was not predictable. The authors assumed that volunteers were recognized as informal resources by elderly in the preference measures, but in fact, they were as formal resources. The reliability analysis indicated the the measures were reliable in terms of internal consistency. The descriptive statistics outcomes indicated that elderly were likely to prefer family members in both instrumental and emotional supports and that elderly were likely to prefer friends` and/ or neighbors` emotional supports in addition to family members` supports. The inferential statistics outcomes indicated that the factors associated with the preferences were age and living arrangement.
