This study tested a hypothesis that the Korean aged sharing a household only with their unmarried adult child(ren) should be excluded from the analysis when studying the determinants of the independent living arrangements among the Korean aged and their adult children. This insistence comes from the dominant Korean living culture which is characterized by the coresidence of older parents with their unmarried adult children almost regardless of the demographic, economic, and social circumstances of the former. A probability sample with 2,058 Korean aged 60 years and older originally conducted by the Korea Ministry of Health and Social Welfare in 1994 is analyzed for this study. For the purpose of the present study, ever-married Koreans aged 60+ with surviving children were included in the analysis. Those Korean aged who did not answer the questions of the relevant variables this study employed were excluded from the analysis. A total of 1,979 Korean aged were included for the analysis. Statistical techniques such as t-test, Chi-square, and logistic regression were employed for the analysis. Results show that compared to other Korean aged cohort, the Korean aged living only with their unmarried adult children) tend to be rich, healthy, young, and educated with a spouse living in cities. These factors are known highly associated with the separate living arrangements from adult children. The logistic regression analysis for the total sample(n=1,979) indicates that the monthly income, number of children, marital status, and residence region are related to the separate living arrangements. But the results excluded those elderly living only with their unmarried adult children(n=246) shows that other two factors such as educational level and age are also statistically significant determining independent living arrangements. This study finally concludes with a support of the study hypothesis. That is, the Korean elderly sharing a household only with their unmarried adult children must be excluded from the analysis when studying the determinants of the independent living arrangements among the Korean aged and their adult children.
