Korean contrastive marker ‘un/nun’ generally appears to the immediate right of a contrasted constituent. However, there are instances where the contrastive marker appears within a contrasted constituent. In this paper, I argue that these apparent abnormal contrastive markings arise when contrastive markers project (cf. projection of information focus in English). In other words, the grammar allows contrastive marking on an internal argument to mark contrastiveness of the VP in Korean. Such a projection of contrastiveness is allowed as contrastive elements marked by ‘un/nun’ does not require movement to a specific syntactic position to receive a contrastive reading (cf. Kiss 1998). The projection analysis can be extended to account for the discrepancy observed between contrastive marking and contrasted elements in English and Japanese as well.
