What is Lacanian psychoanalytic criticism? Do Lacanian scholars in Korea practice psychoanalytic criticism? In order to answer this question, I will introduce Chan Bu Park, one of the most well-known Lacanian scholar in Korea in order to prove that he did not write any single article of reading literature. I would not mention this if such a lack of criticism is only his problem. Most of the scholars with psychoanalytic affiliation do not practice psychoanalytic reading. There is a symptomatic split of theory and practice in psychoanalytic scholars in Korea. They know what psychoanalytic criticism should be, but do not engage with it. Even their discussion about psychoanalytic reading takes the form of paraphrasing Lacan’s reading of Hamlet. This means that the explication, not reading, of Lacan’s text occupies most of their academic activities. Such a habit of theoretical explication has a dire consequence. It prevents them from reading their colleagues’ writings, which they do not think deserve explication: they are not as authoritative texts as Lacan’s. They ignore their colleagues, even a scholar like Chan Bu Park. So that they are forced to begin at origin again and again with Lacan, not with their colleagues, undoing their scholarship and making it ahistorical. This paper ends with the conclusion that Korean psychoanalytic criticism should begin not with reading Lacan, but with reading Chan Bu Park.
