The purpose of this study is to consider the possibility and limitation of character formation in physical education through the review of related literatures. I mentioned first the object of character formation of physical education with a special emphasis on physical, mental, social factor, and considered the condition of character formation from two points of view-physical activity and personality, and the attitude in physical education. The conclusions of the possibility and limitation of character formation in physical education are as follows: First, heredity and environment are important factors for character formation and their roles have been argued. But, these two factors interact with complex forms and play an important role in human development. Second, we can take the character to a fixed limitation within the certain limits through the studying means and method at sport site. We can`t improve the physical fitness or motor skill, and mental and social factors which we expect above genetic limits. But, we can recognize the limits of that by the developmental and physiological limits, the limits of this by doing physical activity intentionally. Third, except sports site, the transfer of emotion and social character through physical activity, to actual life can`t be expected. But it is different by individuals. If we want the attitude learned from the sports site to be transferred to daily life, we should make special efforts for generalization; we should fix our eyes on the principle of similarity by `Identical Element Theory`.
